Bill walton vs. christian laettner?

My buddy says that Christian Laettner had a bettercollegecareer than Bill Walton, I say he didn't. According to Smith %26amp; Street, Walton was the 2nd best player incollegebasketball, Lew Alcindor(Kareem) was 1st. I think Laetner was great incollegebut Walton was better.

Street and Smith are correct.

And OMG, your buddy must never have even seen FILMS of Bill Walton in college, let alone ever seeing him play on TV or in person.

Christian Laettner wouldn't be one of the 100 bestcollegeplayers ever, Bill Walton is probably the 2nd best player in the history ofcollegebasketball (behind Lew Alcindor)... maybe Bill Russell (who averaged over 20 pts and 20 reb /game in hiscollegecareer, and also won 2 titles) could sneak in at #2, but Walton would be no worse than #3.

Some people make these arguments about Laettner and claim that it's harder to win the NCAA tournament now, since so many teams participate...but of course, they fail to understand that UCLA wasn't going to lose to any #16 seed with Walton around!

UCLA won 88 games in a row, with Walton being a huge part of that streak.

Walton played the greatest Finals game ever, going 21 of 22 from the field in 1973. (John Wooden always teased him about that, saying "I thought you were a great player, Bill, until you missed that shot against Memphis State").

Laettner was overrated because ESPN constantly replayed his shot against Kentucky. ESPN wasn't around when Walton played... Walton's a Hall of Famer because of what he did on the court, not because ESPN made his career.

Walton's career W/L record in his 3 years at UCLA was 86-4, with all 4 loses coming in his senior year. He led UCLA to two unbeaten seasons.

Laettner holds a few NCAA tournament records, but that's because he played more games (allowing him to clean up against 16th seeds and 8th seeds in the first two rounds), and Laettner was also eligible to play varsity as a freshman, which Walton and Alcindor were not.

Laettner, like Michael Jordan, has benefited greatly from ESPN's so called "coverage" of sports... ESPN thinks everything has been greater during it's existence than it ever was before.

Bill walton vs. christian laettner?lakers ,nba teams

Yes, I might have been a bit harsh on him due to his meaningless pro career...but he could very well be a top 100collegeplayer. If we worked at it, we might find 100collegeplayers who were better. But it might be tough. A hundred is a lot. But he wasn't anything close to what Walton was. Report It

I think Walton had the better career. Obviously, Walton also had a hell of a supporting cast, but Laettner's team wasn't too bad either.

Incidentally, I think Walton would be a better NBA center than Laettner TODAY. Laettner has been one of the biggest NBA busts ever.
walton had the bettercollegecareer...but laettner had the most memorable moment. the shot he sank against kentucky during the 92' ncaa tourney. arguably the greatest game played incollegeball.
Walton had the better career you still see him carry the lakers and he is not that nice because he is not really playing hard. Walton is sick.
you! are right! your friend owes you money! bill walton was a tremendouscollegeplayer and helped bring ucla those titles! christain laetner? good, but no walton!!
